Privacy Policy

Chess Openings has no account and no ads, and it does not track you. Your progress stays on your iPhone. The app sends anonymous usage events and crash reports so we can fix problems and improve lessons, and Apple and RevenueCat process purchases. This page explains each of these in plain words.

Who we are

Chess Openings Trainer & Coach ("the app") and this website are made by WP Center. Questions about privacy go to support@chessopenings.co.

Your progress stays on your device

Lessons, positions, traps and your review schedule are all stored on your iPhone. Your progress, streak, daily goal, reminder time and settings are saved on the device only. We do not run a server that stores them, and there is nothing to sign in to.

The Home Screen and Lock Screen widget reads today's review count from the app's own storage on your device. Reports you make with the "explanation is wrong" button are saved on your device unless you choose to email them to us.

Usage analytics (PostHog)

The app uses PostHog to count anonymous usage events, for example that a lesson was finished, a review was done, a match against Rook Bot was played or the upgrade screen was shown. With some events it records simple details such as the opening chosen, the rating range you picked during setup and your daily goal. It never records your name, email, contacts or precise location.

Events are linked to a random identifier created for this installation of the app. It is not linked to your name, your email or your Apple Account, and it changes if you delete and reinstall the app. PostHog also receives standard technical details such as the app version, iOS version and device model, and, as with any internet connection, your IP address, which may be used to estimate a country. We do not use this data to identify you.

PostHog also records crash and error reports (for example the screen and the error message) so we can find and fix bugs. PostHog's policy is at posthog.com/privacy.

Purchases (Apple and RevenueCat)

Payments are handled entirely by Apple. We never see your card or payment details.

To know whether you have an active subscription or Lifetime access, the app uses RevenueCat. RevenueCat processes the purchase information Apple provides together with an anonymous app user ID that is not linked to your name, email or Apple Account. This lets your purchase be restored on a new iPhone. RevenueCat's policy is at revenuecat.com/privacy.

Notifications

Daily reminders and the reminder before a trial ends are scheduled on your iPhone itself. They are not sent from our servers, and you can turn them off at any time in iPhone Settings.

Tracking and advertising

There is none. The app shows no ads, does not use the advertising identifier (IDFA), does not track you across other companies' apps or websites and never asks for tracking permission. We do not sell or share personal data.

Data we do not collect

No account details, no contact information, no precise location, no photos, no contacts, no microphone or camera access, and no chess account usernames. The app does not connect to Lichess or Chess.com.

This website

This website has no accounts and no forms. If analytics is turned on for the site, it counts visits and clicks on the App Store button with Google Analytics, without advertising cookies. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland it only does so after you accept the cookie banner. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes standard request data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the site.

How long we keep data

Anonymous usage events and crash reports are kept for as long as they are useful to improve the app, and at most 24 months. Purchase records are kept by Apple and RevenueCat as long as needed for your purchase and for legal and tax obligations.

Children

The app is suitable for all ages. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children, and the anonymous events described above contain nothing that identifies a child.

Your rights

Laws such as the GDPR and the CCPA give you the right to access, correct or delete personal data a company holds about you. Because the app has no account and its data is anonymous, there is usually nothing we can look up by your name or email. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on your iPhone and its installation identifiers. If you want us to delete analytics data for your installation, email us and we will help. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will appear on this page with a new date. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app's release notes.
